Becky Edwards SUSC Alumni Drafted to FC Gold Pride
1/21/2010—Many young children dream about winning a national title, playing college soccer, winning a World Cup or an Olympic Gold medal, and some day playing professional soccer. Becky Edwards, who grew up in Downingtown and played most of her youth soccer career in a Spirit United uniform, has dreamed about those things and took another step in her soccer career on Friday, January 15th when she was drafted to FC Gold Pride as the twelfth pick overall (first pick of the second round). FC Gold Pride is located in California’s Bay Area.
Becky started playing recreational soccer when she was five. She made her first travel team when she was six. She “played up” on Rich McLaughlin’s Lightning team where the curriculum focused on skill. At seven, she continued to play for Lightning and joined Mike Hurley’s boys “Force” team which was a bit more physical. Becky played on the Force through U-13 and then played with the SUSC Tar Heels coached by Mick Statham.
Becky was a four year varsity starter at Downingtown HS (West) under head coaches Mary Schanne and Rob Smith. The Whippets are always successful and the seasons were packed with fun soccer, team dinners, and lady bugs! A highlight for Becky was being a part of the first ever Downingtown West HS State Championship team during her junior year. When she wasn’t on the soccer field, you could find her on the basketball court.
Summer and holiday breaks were spent at ODP events that eventually led Becky to be called up to regional and youth national team events.
In August 2006, Becky reported to Florida State University for soccer pre-season. She chose FSU because of head coach Mark Krikorian (former WUSA Philadelphia Charge coach) and because of the FSU facilities. She couldn’t have had a better soccer experience. Four years of exciting Seminole soccer flew by. She met with Mark today and then watched some of her FSU teammates practice. She called and said, “I’m so lucky to have gone to school at FSU and had Mark for my coach”. Becky knows that she wouldn’t be where she is without her teammates, hard work, discipline, and good coaching at all levels of the game. After two College Cup appearances, one as finalists, winning the 2008 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile, being named Herman Trophy Semifinalist, a two-time first team NSCAA Scholar All American, a two-time first team NSCAA All American, Becky is ready to take the next step….FC Gold Pride, California.
Spirit United Soccer Club congratulates Becky and wishes her all the best with FC Gold Pride.
