Penn Fusion ’95 girls winners at Jefferson Cup
3/22/2010—Steady, determined play and a heavy dose of teamwork guided the Penn Fusion ’95 girls to a championship trophy as the undefeated winners of the U-14 Premier White division in the Jefferson Cup tournament, March 20-21.
Down 1-0 at halftime of the championship game, Penn Fusion rallied for two goals in the second half to seal the victory over HMMS Eagles FC (PA) in regulation and capture the champions’ medals. The comeback win capped a weekend of continued progress for the ‘95s.
Penn Fusion opened the tournament with a fast 3-1 win against FC Greater Boston Bolts, and then withstood a physically strong Harpeth FC (TN) squad, battling to a scoreless draw to sit atop the bracket by the end of the first day’s play. The focus was clear heading into the third game, and Penn Fusion rolled to a 3-0 win over PASCO (NJ).
“We needed contributions from everyone, so it was great to see that happen”, Penn Fusion coach Garry Chandler said. “Some injuries and other in-game situations required a good bit of problem-solving, and the players did a terrific job with the challenges. We are really coming together at the right time. All of our goals were beautiful plays, and defensively, we limited the opponents admirably well.”
Penn Fusion’s success at Jefferson Cup came on the heels of a strong showing the weekend before at the Arlington Spring Invitational tournament. The ’95 girls were competitive throughout that tournament, including a 1-0 win against the Virginia state cup champion Richmond Kickers.
