'96 Blue takes Delco League Champions
11/15/2009—The '96 U13 Boys Blue team solidified first place on the final weekend of the season after an 8 win, 2 draw, 1 loss regular season campaign.
The Semifinals pitted '96 Blue against Springfield United Soccer Club and after a scoreless first half, '96 Blue broke through with 7 minutes remaining in the 2nd half on a goal by Jake. The final 7 minutes were frantic, as Springfield battled back to try to even the score, but Davis turned away a couple of quality chances and '96 Blue held on to move into the U13D3 Finals.
The Final was played at the Line Road fields under less than ideal conditions and the game featured '96 Blue vs. the TEYSA Warriors (1-0 winners over Coventry in Semifinal 2). Field conditions prevented both teams from having too many scoring chances early on and the game was played between the 18's for most of the first half. TEYSA had the best scoring chance of the 1st half as their striker got behind the defense and into the box. Jason made a superb defensive effort, as he ran down the striker and broke up the attack with a solid tackle that sent the ball harmlessly over the endline.
After halftime, both teams came out to put away the game and a number of quality scoring chances were turned aside leading to a tense final 15. Julian turned away the best TEYSA scoring chance of the 2nd half with a calm and cool clearance off the goal line, on a corner kick that got between keeper and goalpost.. After that, '96 Blue was not to be denied. Possession quickly turned to into quality scoring opportunities and with 5 minutes left in regulation, Brian jumped on a rebound and sent the GAME WINNER into the back of the net sending '96 Blue team to it's first league Championship. As a result, Coaches Dom and Chris Popolizio lead the boys to an astounding 31-point DELCO season (10win, 2draw, 1loss) in their 1st year.
Throughout the year the defense was locked down by Kenny, Will, Jason, Adam and Julian. The midfield was anchored by Matt, Kieran, Chris, Ryan, Justin, Stephen and Charlie, and the offense was led by Jake, Brent and Brian, while Davis was solid in goal all year.
