Blue '96 Finalist at the 1st Primo Cup
12/2/2009—The Spirit U13 Blue '96 Boys wrapped up their Fall campaign as Finalists at the Primo Cup held at USTC (November 28-29, 2009).
Spirit's weekend started with a 1-1 tie against a very formidable opponent in Montgomery United Soccer Club (Delco Div. Premier 2 Finalist). Game 2 against Towamencin Tomahawks ended in a 4-0 win for Spirit Blue and resulted in Day 1 finishing with a tie for the top spot in Bracket A between Spirit Blue and MUSC.
Day 2 started early with a PK Shootout between the 2 top teams to determine seeding for the Semi-Finals. Spirit prevailed over MUSC 4-3 and moved into the top seed in Bracket A, setting up a match-up with the Del-Val Celtic club. Game 3 was by no means Spirit Blue's best effort of the tournament, but the boys did what they came to do and put away Celtic 2-0. The Final saw another rematch between Spirit Blue and MUSC (3-0 winners vs. Towamencin Topguns in the other Semi-Final) on Field 2 under a clear blue sky and 55 degree weather. The first half ended in a 0-0 deadlock as Davis Alliger kept MUSC off the board with 2 spectacular saves. MUSC struck 10 minutes into the 2nd half off a cross from the right corner that was knocked around Spirit Blue's box before dribbling over the goal line for a 1-0 MUSC lead. After a 60th minute straight-red card of a MUSC midfielder, Spirit Blue stepped up the pressure and began to dominate possession and opportunities. The final 5 minutes saw a handful of quality scoring chances for Spirit, but none were able to find the back of the net and draw Blue even.
It was a great weekend and a great fall season that ended with an exciting Final versus a powerful opponent from Montgomery United. The boys held their heads high in accepting their Finalist medals and are looking forward to moving into the Spring State Cups.
